How much does a stair lift cost: what drives the price

There is no official price table. We show eight dated values from public projects (chairs and platforms), what changes the price and how to compare quotes.

In short

  • We found no official reference price: Despacho no. 11077/2025 has assistive product codes, with no values.
  • Eight dated values from public projects: chairs from 3,301.89 € to 8,738.21 € and platforms from 9,627.00 € to 16,766.90 €, seven of eight without VAT included.
  • They are single cases, not an average; the staircase (straight or curved, steps, landings) and works around it weigh a lot.
  • Compare written quotes, with the same measurement and the same lines, including the VAT rate.

Almost everyone starts by asking “how much does it cost?”. In Portugal there is no official price table for stair lifts, so this guide shows what we found: values from public works, with the body and the date, and the list of what pushes the price up or down. You will know what to expect and what to ask each company.

Updated on 3 November 2026. General information. The values below are single cases, not a market price and not a promise of a quote.

The essentials

  • We found no official reference price. Despacho no. 11077/2025 (the list of assistive products) has the codes for stair lifts with a seat and with a platform, but no values.
  • We found eight dated values, from public project records. Stair lift chairs: from 3,301.89 € to 8,738.21 €. Platforms: from 9,627.00 € to 16,766.90 €. Seven of the eight without VAT included.
  • They are examples, not an average. Each one has its own staircase, its own works and its own buyer.
  • The staircase weighs more than the brand: straight or curved, number of steps and landings, indoor or outdoor, and works around it.
  • VAT changes the total by hundreds of euros. See 6% and 23% VAT.

Dated values from public projects

The “Acessibilidades 360°” (360° Accessibility) programme of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) paid municipalities for stair lift chairs and platforms, in homes of people with a disability and in public buildings. The records are on the Mais Transparência portal and some state the planned value, with or without VAT. We picked those that state it in the text.

Municipality (record) What was bought Value VAT Project start
Vila Nova de Poiares Stair lift chair, straight run, 8 steps, 1.36 m rise 3,301.89 € without VAT 10.09.2024
Guimarães Stair lift chair, supply and installation 3,545.10 € not stated 30.06.2024
Lousã Folding chair along the wall, in a home 3,900.00 € VAT to be added 01.09.2024
Oliveira do Hospital Automatic stair lift, stairs to a home 8,738.21 € VAT to be added 03.09.2024
Alcochete Stair platform, municipal building 9,627.00 € VAT to be added 02.12.2024
Seixal Platform in a school, 3.80 m level difference 11,859.25 € without VAT 03.07.2022
Ribeira de Pena Stair platform, access to a home 16,200.00 € without VAT 02.01.2024
Lisboa Platform for 18 steps and 2 landings, in a block of flats 16,766.90 € without VAT 06.08.2025

How to read the table:

  • These are values planned in applications, not final invoices. For Seixal, the record says the value comes from requests for quotes.
  • The Lisboa record also describes a ramp and the widening of a doorway, so the value may cover more than the platform.
  • Only the Poiares record says “straight”. For the others we do not know whether the staircase is straight or curved.
  • The buyer is a municipality, under a public procedure. A private buyer may pay more or less.
  • An example with VAT. On the 3,301.89 € of Poiares, VAT would be about 198 € at 6% and 759 € at 23% (our arithmetic). The rate depends on the equipment.

And a curved staircase?

We found no price for a stair lift chair on a curved staircase. The only record with a curved-stair platform is the Escola Secundária of Vila Pouca de Aguiar (a folding platform of 800 by 1000 mm). It gives 13 thousand euros for the whole project, which includes ramps, without stating VAT. It is not the price of the platform.

KONE Portugal publishes “from” prices for one stair platform model: 11,000 € for straight stairs and 16,000 € for curved stairs, which need a custom route and made-to-measure rails. The page has no visible date and does not say whether VAT or installation is included. It is one brand and a minimum, not a price.

What makes the price change

  • Straight or curved. A curved rail is made to the route. Measure the staircase well before asking for quotes: see how to measure.
  • Chair or platform. In our table, platforms cost more than chairs. To choose, see chair or platform.
  • Length, steps and landings. A staircase of 8 steps and one of 18 steps with 2 landings are not the same job.
  • Indoor or outdoor. KONE says that outdoors, weather-resistant materials may be needed.
  • Load, number of stops and finishes. KONE also lists these as reasons for an increase.
  • Works around it. The records mention removing a gate (Lousã) and widening a doorway (Lisboa).
  • VAT. For the rules on the rates, see the guide on VAT and income tax.
  • Maintenance and warranty. We found no maintenance prices. Ask for them in writing; the legal warranty is in the guide on comparing quotes.

How to use these numbers

  1. Ask for at least three written quotes, based on the same measurement of the staircase. A price given without seeing the stairs is an estimate, not a quote.
  2. Ask whether the price includes VAT, installation, the electrical connection and works. That is often where quotes differ.
  3. Compare line by line, with the table in the guide on comparing quotes.
  4. Check for support in who pays before you sign.

What we could not confirm

  • Contracts on the BASE portal. We found no stair lift chair contracts, and the direct search on the portal did not open for us.
  • Official reference values. There are none in Despacho no. 11077/2025. We also found no prices published by DECO PROteste or the Portal do Consumidor.
  • The price of a stair lift chair on a curved staircase, in a home or a public building.
  • Whether the values were the invoiced ones. In two records, the “total project amount” differs from the value written in the text (Seixal: 8.62 thousand €; Lisboa: 14.36 thousand €). We do not know why, and we used the value in the text.
  • Maintenance prices and the annual contract.
  • Prices from shops and comparison sites. We saw ranges in search results, and they contradict each other. We did not open them and do not use them.
